Our TCS Counsellor, Alison, is taking part in the Great South Run on 17th October 2021 running 10km in Portsmouth. Alison is raising money for SDAC to support people affected by addiction and their loved ones, like a Mum who has kindly shared her story. Please donate what you can to support SDAC services and Alison's run #greatsouthrun2021.
My dear son died from an overdose at 30 years old. Before that he spent 12 years struggling with mental health issues and addiction.
As the mother of an addict, one of the hardest things to cope with is the stigma attached to the disease of addiction. There are no words to describe the heartache and sadness you experience as a parent watching your child struggling with mental illness and addiction. I felt isolated and felt unable to talk to friends or family about the problem. I reached out for help to Surrey Drug and Alcohol Care for support. With the assistance of Surrey Drug and Alcohol Care counselling services I was able to deploy strategies to help me cope with the situation I was facing and access as many sources of help for my son as possible. I was also supported by Surrey Drug & Alcohol Care following the very sad loss of my son.
During the course of my son’s addiction, he also found support and help with Surrey Drug & Alcohol Care helpline and Charis Alcohol and Drug Therapy Unit (www.charislondon.org).
Addiction is a disease that devastates and affects not only the addict, but all members of the family and it is vital that support is available to all those involved to cope with this terrible illness.
